Key Line Analysis
A.) In this quote, Othello is trying to win over Desdemona’s father. He is basically saying that although he has killed many in war, he still has iniquity, that is, he still has moral values and is not an evil person. By telling him this, he is trying to show him that his occupation has not striped him of his right to love someone.
B.) This is an accusation by Barbantio, that Othello must have used some sort of supernatural power or spell, to gain the love of his daughter. For this reason, Barbantio is enraged with Othello.
C.) In this line, Othello is putting his trust and faith in Desdemona that she will stand up for their love. Othello sees this as the only way to truly gain Barbantio’s trust. This line shows Othello’s immense love and trust in Desdemona, because he is willing to put his life on the line to prove that Desdemona is truly in love with him.
D.) In this line, Barbantio is saying to Othello that it is so obvious that Desdemona is an unfaithful person who cannot be trusted. He tells Othello that she has forsaken her own father, and will have no problem doing the same to her own husband as well. This line shows her fathers disappointment and disgust towards his daughter’s behavior, but still shows that he respects Othello, and doesn’t hold this against him.
E.) This line is a good indication of Iago’s future plans to sabotage Othello. In this line Iago is basically saying that Othello’s abundant trust in others will soon be replaced with bitter hatred for others, and a lack of trust in other human’s intensions.
F.) In this line, Iago is trying to convince Rodrigo that betraying Othello has great benefits for the both of them. This line really shows what lengths of cunning and betrayal that Iago is willing to go to, in order to bring down Othello.
G.) This line describes Othello’s nature, very well. This shows that Iago has a very good understanding of Othello’s nature, and is willing to take advantage of Othello. By comparing Othello to a donkey is showing that because of his trusting nature, Othello is very venerable and easily taken advantage of.

g. 1.3.390-394 “The Moor is of a free and open nature, That thinks men honest that but seem to be so, And will as tenderly be led by the nose As asses are!
-Speaker: Iago

Key Line Analysis:
A) Iago has been giving Othello his own version of the conversation with Roderigo. This is significant because it is the step for the plan that Iago is going to do to achieve his goals; against Othello. Roderigo was hired as an assistant to Iago while they are doing the plan to take action against Othello. This quote is significant since Iago was frustrated that he is a good at fighting and Othello did not hired him as his lieutenant. Also, Iago reminded this phrase that he will begin to take actions against Othello.
B) Brabantio stated this quote. He was extremely angry with Othello because he “stole” his daughter and they got married without the permission from Brabantio. This quote is significant because this led the Senate, Brabantio to punish Othello for hiding from him about love for Desdemona. Also, this quote led to Othello would not have feelings of guilt for the actions that he did with Desdemona.
C) This quote occurred when the first Senator and Brabantio were making their decisions about what they were going to do with Othello for the punishment. This quote is significant since it describes his value that he is respectful and do not mind about any circumstances; especially in punishment. Also, he is gentle and was eagerness to do anything whatever Brabantio wants him to do. Also, Othello do not mind about the punishments that were made by Brabantio and the first Senator.
D) Brabantio said this quote. This quote is significant since it is very common for daughters to be faithful toward their fathers. However, Desdemona is unfaithful to her father. This is unusual and not common. This showed Othello that Desdemona wants to run away from her father. This quote came up when Brabantio was blaming Othello for stealing his daughter.
E) Iago said this quote. Iago was like he was betting for hoping that he would win over Othello. This has occurred since Othello didn’t give him the prominent position. This quote, has occurred while Iago and Roderigo were talking about the plan. This quote is significant because the money would bring the bitterness of Othello that he will have and Iago would get the money and beat Othello as well.
F) Iago was telling Roderigo that he should take revenge against Othello. Iago is hatred toward the Moor (Othello). Also, Iago is telling Roderigo to convince that Desdemona should be unfaithful to Othello. This would result in Iago complete his revenge against Othello. This quote is significant because Iago will be happy when the mission would be accomplished through cuckolding Othello.
G) Iago stated this quote. He stated that Othello is nice and respectful. Also, Othello is a trustworthy person. Iago was frustrated that people would admire him since Othello is very nice and honest. This quote is significant because Iago is known as “foil character,” whose have characteristics that are opposite of Othello’s characteristics. As a result of that, Iago will revenge him and take him to the devil atmosphere. Iago is going to blame Othello even more since he did lots of good things; cause of his personalities (respectful and trustworthy).

When a mans wife cheats on him.

Speaker: Iago
Explanation: Iago is telling Othello that although he has slain men at war, he is not an evil man at all. By telling Othello this Iago is gaining Othello’s trust. This will make it easy for Iago to stab Othello in the back.
b. 1.2.63 “O thou foul thief! Where hast thou stow’d my daughter? Damn’d as thou art, thou hast enchanted her”
Speaker:Brabantio

Quickie Pickies. Ali R
a) The Nation threatening to invade Cypress is Turkey
b) The crime that Brabantio accuses Othello of committing is kidnapping his daughter and putting her under a spell to love him and run away with him. This really isn’t the case. Othello and Desdemona are madly in love.
c) Roderigo wants to drown himself because he now knows that his love, Desdemona, is married to Othello. He doesn’t want to live anymore knowing that she has married someone else.
d) Iago will use Roderigo by framing him. All Iago wants to do is ruin Othello and his love with Desdemona. Roderigo told Desdemona that he thought she was beautiful. Knowing that Roderigo loves Desdemona will make it easy to start rumors that they are having an affair. Once the rumor is out that Desdemona and Roderigo are having an affair the fights begin. Iago is also using Roderigo for money, he’s steeling from him to makes himself richer.
e) A Cuckold is a women cheating on her husband. This is what Iago is trying to perceive Desdemona as.
Quotes
a) Iago:
This is an ironic quote from Iago. He’ saying that he has killed many men in battle but he does not considers himself not a murder; he believes that he is a loyal soldier to Brabantio. War is his excuse for killing people, but he sees it has being a loyal man doing his job. He discuses himself as being a loyal man, but deep down he’s a traitor waiting to ruin others lives.
b) Brabantio:
Brabantio is accusing Othello of kidnapping his daughter and putting her under a spell of witchcraft.
c) Othello:
Othello has been accused of kidnapping Desdemona, so he tells Desdemona to go talk to her father about it and if she says that it is true, then they can take his life. He’s very confident that Desdemona will tell the truth because they’re very much in love, and Othello trusts Desdemona. This love will soon change because they’re both going to be framed for something they didn’t do and are going to turn on each other. The trust they have will break because of Iago.
d)Barbantio:
Barbantio tells Othello that his daughter has deceived him and that all that deceive are suspected. This statement is somewhat true but will soon be very ironic when word gets out that Desdemona is supposable having an affair, but is really being tricked by Iago and his partner in crime, Roderigo
e)Iago:
Iago is talking to Roderigo about the plan to separate Desdemona and Othello. He’s using a metaphor to describe the love Othello has for his wife, turning very bitter very soon. Everything may be sweet and dandy now, but Iago has a few tricks up his sleeve to pay back Othello for his bad choice in choosing his new partner.
f) Iago:
Iago is telling Roderigo to join with him in the revenge against Othello. If a cheating wife won’t work to separate the loved ones, something along the way will.
g) Iago:
Iago is explaining Othello’s character as being an honest and trusting man, which he is, but he has put trust in a man that should not be trusted and is going to be lead on.
Picture
The picture I picked was of the women holding a mask. This picture resembles Iago and his split personality. He is perceived as being a loyal trusting man that serves Othello with the utmost respect, but underneath it all he is out for revenge against Othello. Iago states this truth while talking to Roderigo, “The Moor is of a free and open nature, That thinks men honest that but seem to be so, And will as tenderly be led by the nose As asses are!”. This explains the truth of what Iago really is. Sooner or later this mask will be revealed, but it will probably be too late and events that will forever change these people will have already happened without their knowing.
Othello 1.2-1.3 Hailey
a) What nation is threatening to invade Cyprus?
Turkey.
b) What crime does Brabantio accuse Othello of committing?
Brabantio accuses Othello of using some form of black magic to weaken Desdemona’s will, making her fall in love with Othello. He believes this because the daughter that he knows is embarrassed about her own desires, is innocent and would not even marry the most rich and hansom man, so obviously she would not give up all she has, and allow herself to be shunned by everyone for an unattractive moor unless it was against her will, by Othellos magic.
c) Roderigo wants to drown himself… why?
Because he is in love with Desdemona and now that Iago and his plan failed to land Othello in jail he feels he has no chance with her, and does not want to live if he cant have her.
d) How will Iago use Roderigo?
He will use him for his own revenge, and to gain money. This will be carried out in a detailed plan. Iago tells Roderigo that Othello will become bored with Desdemona, and no longer want her, and upon the realization of Othello’s unappealing looks and his age, will realize her mistake and go looking for a rich younger man. He tells Roderigo that he should follow them to the war and wear a beard, so that he can be that younger man she will crave. He will then acquire both her love and her family fortune. Iago makes a plan to tell Othello that Cassio is sleeping with Desdona to break them up. Iago expresses in a soliloquy that he has suspicions that Othello is sleeping with his wife. He uses this plan with Roderigo as a pawn to get his reveng on Cassio and Othello and also gain riches from him.
e) Define cuckold (line 1.3.361)
Cuckold- to cuckold a husband is to make his wife cheat on him. In context Iago is telling Rodreigo to “cuckold” Othello, so basically to make Desdemona cheat on Othello with Roderigo, which gives Roderigo pleasure, and Iago enjoyment in watching Othello’s pain.
Key Line Analysis: Explain the context and significance for each quotation.
“Though in the trade of war I have slain men, Yet do I hold it very stuff o’the conscience To do no contriv’d murder. I lack iniquity”
Iago is lying to Othello telling him that Roderigo was saying horrible things behind Othello’s back. He says that even though he has killed men in war, he is extremely opposed to premeditated murder. He goes on to say he doesn’t have enough evil in him to kill anyone, but he tells Othello that he thought murderous thoughts towards Roderigo, for saying such evil and dishonourable things about Othello. This entire quote is a lie to Othello used to cover up his deceit and disloyalty as well as to gain more of Othello’s trust and make Othello view him as an honest and kind person, in order to use him, and make it easier to get revenge without Othello’s knowledge.
“O thou foul thief! Where hast thou stow’d my daughter? Damn’d as thou art, thou hast enchanted her”
This quote is said by Brabantio , to Othello after finding out that Desdemona has run off and married Othello. He demands to know where Othello is hiding her. He accuses Othello of using black magic to cause Desdona to fall in love with Othello.
“Send for the lady to the Sagittary and let her speak of me before her father. If you do find me foul in her report, the trust, the office I do hold of you, not only take away, but let your sentence even fall upon my life”
This takes place when Othello is trying to prove, to the Duke and Brabantio that he has not used magic to make Desdemona love him.
He has such trust that Desdemona truly loves him that he tells them to bring Desdemona there to tell them all how she truly feels, and if she says it was not by her consent that she is with him, they can sentence him to death. This is important because it develops Othello as very trusting, so trusting that he puts his life in the hands of Desdemona, who could cause his death with simple words.
“Look to her, Moor, if thou hast eyes to see: She has deceiv’d her father and may thee”
Brabantio says to Othello that he should keep a close watch on Desdona, as she had deceived him, making him believe she was innocent and pure, when in fact she lied and ran off with Othello, and implies that if she did such a thing to her own father she could also Decieve Othello, especially since Othello is so trusting of her. After this Othello says he has no worries and trusts Desdemona completely.
The food that to him now is as luscious as locusts shall to him shortly as acerb as the coloquintida” This is said by Iago, and basically means that though Othello is in love with Desdemona now, soon he will bore of her and she will be worthless and unsatisfying to Othello. He says this to Roderigo in order to build his confidence and make him willing to go forth with Iago’s plan for revenge and money.
“ Let us be conjunctive in our revenge against him. If thou canst cuckold him, thou dost thyself a pleasure, me a sport”
Iago tells Roderrigo to make Desdemona cheat on Othello with him so that it will break up Othello as well as be pleasurable to Roderigo and fun for Iago to see the downfall of Othello and play games with his mind.
“The Moor is of a free and open nature, That thinks men honest that but seem to be so, And will as tenderly be led by the nose As asses are!”
Iago says to himself that because Othello is so trusting of him it will be easy to make him believe Iago’s lies, and trust that what Iago says is true. He is talking about how he is going to deceive Othello and make him believe that Cassio and Desdemona are having an affair to get his revenge on Cassio, and Othello and make it easier for him to make money off of Roderigo. He says that this will work because Othello is blindly trusting and stupidly so.
