a) What reasons does Iago have to be enraged at Cassio?

Iago can be enraged at Cassio because Iago didn’t get the lieutenant job and Cassio got it. Cassio hasn’t had any experience with battle or won any, and he is an outsider from Venice.

b) What reasons does Iago have for betraying Othello?

Iago can betray Othello because he is more experienced than Cassio and didn’t get the job. Also, because Othello isn’t from Venice so he is an outsider and he is a different race than everyone in that country making him different

c) Who is Brabantio, and what does Iago tell him about his daughter?

Barbantio is Desdemona’s dad. Iago tell Barbantio that his daughter is running around and having sex with Othello. This would make Barbantio mad because he trusts his daughter and is suppose to have control of her but he doesn’t when he finds out that his daughter escaped the house.

d) Who is Roderigo in love with?

Roderigo is in love with Desdemona but he was not able to marry her because of his class level. Barbantio did not allow the marriage.

a)

Speaker: Iago
Explanation: Iago is describing to Roderigo that he has no reason to support Othello. Since Othello is outside of the Venice then he really shouldn’t be the leader of the army because he isn’t truly a citizen. This line is significant because it shows that Iago doesn’t truly support his commander and army.

b)

Speaker: Iago
Explanation: Iago is going to be compassionate towards people. This will cause individuals in the play to be confused and not see through his fake ways. Iago will seem like a good guy but in reality he is putting on a act to fool people for his scheme to work.

c)

Speaker: Barbantio
Explanation: Barbantio explains the Iago that his daughter is still in the house and that she is trustworthy and that he does not have to worry about her because he trusts her. This shows that Barbantio is a trustful person because he is able to trust his daughter even though she is going out with a guy and her Dad does not know. Barbantio believes that he can trust people but in reality he is being fooled.

d)

Speaker: Iago
Explanation: Iago is telling Barbantio that his daughter has deceived him and gone behind his back to be with Othello. Also, that they are having sex behind his back. Iago is telling him that his daughter is not trustworthy. The Moor is being tricked upon but they do not know yet.

3) Barbantio is the father of Desdamona, Iago tells Barbantio that his daughter is disgracing the family by having a sexual relationship with a moor (Othello).

4) Roberigo is in love with Desdamona.

Quote 1) Speaker: Iago
Situation: Talking to Roberigo about his dissatisfaction with Othello.
Significance: This quote is significant because it shows why Iago is angry with Othello, and why he feels that he has to follow Othello because of ranks.

Quote 2) Speaker: Iago
Situation: In the street talking to Roderigo.
Significance: Iago is saying that he is not going to be honest, he will pretend to be (in his plan to hurt Othello and Cassio), but really he will be a villain.

Quote 3) Speaker: Barbantio
Situation: Outside speaking to Iago and Roderigo.
Significance: This quote essentially entails that Barbantio does not approve of any potential relationship between Roderigo and Desdamona.

Quote 4) Speaker: Iago
Situation: Speaking to Barbantio outside.
Significance: Iago essentially tells Barbantio a lie that Desdamona and the moor (othello) are sleeping together and digracing the family.

a) What reasons does Iago have to be enraged at Cassio?
Iago could be angry at Cassio because the lieutenant job was given to him even though he has no battle experience and he is not from Venice.

b) What reasons does Iago have for betraying Othello?
Iago betrays Othello for the fact that he was not appointed the lieutenant position and the fact that Othello is a Moor which is considered greatly different.

c) Who is Brabantio, and what does Iago tell him about his daughter?

Roderigo is in love with Desdemona.

a. 1.1.38-40 “…Now sir, be judge yourself whether I in any just term am affin’d to love the Moor”

Explanation: This is when Iago explains to Roderigo why he does not like Othello. It is because he believes Othello should not be the leader of their army as he comes from outside of Venice, thus not a true citizen.

b. 1.1.65-66 “But I will wear my heart upon my sleeve for daws to peck at. I am not what I am.”
Speaker: Iago

c. 1.1.98-100 “I have charg’d thee not to haunt about my doors In honest plainest thou hast heard me say My daughter is not for thee”
Speaker: Barbantio
Explanation: This took place when Iago and Roderigo told Barbantio about the relationship that Desdemona and Othello shared. Being an honest man he told the two of them that he knows his daughter and that she would not do such a thing.

d. 1.1.116-117 "I am one, sire, that comes to tell you your daughter and the Moor are now making the beast with two backs"
Speaker: Iago
Explanation: This takes place when Iago says to Barbantio that his daughter cannot be trusted no longer as she betrayed him by sharing a physical relationship with Othello.

Literal meaning
1.1a) Iago has hatred towards Cassio because Cassio was chosen over Iago by Othello to be the post lieutenant despite the experience that Iago had from previous battles. Casio has no experience and he was still chosen over Iago. Iago is very surprised and upset because he was supposed to get the job no matter what. Iago is going to pay back Othello for his poor decision

b) The reason Iago has for betraying Othello is the fact that he didn’t get the job he was sure to get and instead someone with less experience was given the job. He also knows that’s Othello is married to Desdemona, Brabanzio daughter. He’s ready to destroy their love for revenge on the way Othello betrayed him.

c) Brabantio is Desdemona’s father who is a Venetian senator. Iago and Rodrigo tell him that his lieutenant has married his daughter behind his back. He wants to ruin Othello for what he did to him.

d) Rodrigo is in love with Branbantio’s daughter, Desdemona. She is secretly married to Othello.

Quotes
a) Iago is speaking the first quote. He is telling Rodrigo that no matter what has happened he still respects Othello, but secretly he’s out to get him. He’s using Rodrigo to do his dirty work while he stands in the distance. Rodrigo isn’t very smart and doesn’t realise what Iago’s real plan is.
b) Iago is speaking the second quote. He’s explaining that once he gets Othello caught with Desdemona he’ll be able to prove his true self to everyone and Brabantio. He’ll be able to prove his loyalty to Brabantio.
c) Brabantio speaks the third quote. He’s frustrated that Iago and Rodrigo would come and disturb him in the middle of the night with their nonsense. He trust his daughter very much and would never think that’s she would be fooling around with Othello. Othello is a black man and he would not be acceptable for Desdemona. Unknowingly Desdemona has married Othello behind her fathers back because of the likely hood that he would not approve.
d) Iago speaks the last quote. He told Brabantio that his daughter and Othello are having sexual relations together. This is all pay back to Othello for not hiring him as his Lieutenant. He knows that once Brabantio is convinced that they’re together, he’ll have Othello and Desdemona separated and Othello would lose his job.

a) What reasons does Iago have to be enraged at Cassio?
-When Othello made his decision on who was going to be his Lieutenant, he had chosen Cassio instead of Iago. This caused Iago to be angry with Othello because Cassio is less experienced and is not Venetian.

b) What reasons does Iago have for betraying Othello?
-For one, Iago was not chosen for the position and also that Othello was a Moor, showing that Iago thinks of himself as a more superior individual.

c) Who is Brabantio, and what does Iago tell him about his daughter?
-Brabantio is the father of Desdemona who is Othello’s wife. Iago wanted to seek revenge on Othello and by doing so he informs Barbantio of Othello’s and Desdemona’s relationship.

d) Who is Roderigo in love with?
-Roderigo is another soilder ends up becoming Iago assistant because Iago promised Roderigo that Desdemona and him would be together, since he was obsessed with her.

a. 1.1.38-40 “…Now sir, be judge yourself whether I in any just term am affin’d to love the Moor”
-Speaker: Iago
-Iago is explaining that he does not support Othello because of his nationality and that he is a Moor. This is significant because it shows Iago’s disrespect for Othello.

b. 1.1.65-66 “But I will wear my heart upon my sleeve for daws to peck at. I am not what I am.”
-Speaker: Iago
-By wearing his heart on his sleeve, Iago will be able to maintain his false presence as an honest and loyal solder towards Othello and not show his true feeling towards the matter.

c. 1.1.98-100 “I have charg’d thee not to haunt about my doors In honest plainest thou hast heard me say My daughter is not for thee”
-Speaker: Brabantio
-Roderigo is infatuated with Brabantio’s daughter, Desdemona. In the past, Roderigo has asked Brabantio for his daughter’s hand in marriage but Barbantio keeps on turning his proposal down. When Brabantio sees Roderigo and Iago outside of his home, he assumes it is for the same reasons.

d. 1.1.116-117 "I am one, sire, that comes to tell you your daughter and the Moor are now making the beast with two backs"
-Speaker: Iago
-When Iago and Roderigo are standing outside of Barbantio’s home, Iago clearly states that Othello and Barbantio’s daughter, Desdemona, are together without Barbantio’s permission. This enrages Barbantio because of his daughter’s actions and as well at the fact that Othello is solder and not a nobleman.

Act 1.1

a. Iago’s main reason for being angry with Othello, is the fact that Othello chose Casio as his officer, or right hand man. To anyone else this would not be a huge deal, but Iago has been working with Othello much longer and see’s himself in much higher regards than Casio.
b. The reasons that Iago has for betraying Othello are; that he feels betrayed by Othello when he is not chosen as his assistant, and there is a certain amount of jealousy that Iago has towards Othello.
c. Barbantio is Desdemona’s father. He is very important and has a lot of power in these times. He is a very influential person.
d. Roderigo, is supposedly in love with Desdemona, but to me his love seems like a high school crush as his interests in her seem superficial.

Analyze Text
A) The speaker in this line is Iago. He is ranting to Rodrigo about his problems towards Othello. In this particular quote, Iago is asking for Rodrigo’s support and is asking Rodrigo to tell him that he is not wrong for being mad at Othello. This is an important line because it solidifies Iago’s intentions and also gains the support of his pawn, Rodrigo.
B) The speaker in this line is again Iago. He is explaining to Rodrigo, more reasons to dislike Othello. When he says this quote, he is saying that he will act a certain way, but his intensions will be completely different. He will act in a way so that people think they are seeing the real him, but are greatly mistaken.
C) The speaker in this line is Barbantio. Barbantio and Rodrigo obviously have a past together, because this line shows that Barbantio doesn’t take to well to Rodrigo being there. He thinks Rodrigo is there for his daughter, when really he is there to deliver the bad news.
D) This is Rodrigo speaking. He is insinuating to Barbantio that the moor and his daughter have married. This is a very important line because this is where Barbantio finds out that his daughter has been doing things behind his back, and that Othello cannot be trusted as well. This leads to the issue being brought up in front of the Duke.
